Arat

Only a handful of the Saviors have emerged as recurring characters. And only is female. Arat is clearly someone that Negan trusts and depends on. As the only female Savior that has a high rank within Negan’s army it would be really interesting to see how she got there and what her story is.

Negan’s treatment of women may not always be admirable. But it’s interesting how he allows women to be fighters if they want to be. In other communities that have been shown it seems that women usually are assigned more traditional gender roles.  Often they end up doing the cooking and cleaning and chores that are considered “women’s work”.

Negan thinks of himself as a pretty good guy when it comes to his treatment of women. And in some ways he is. His “no rape” policy is something that undoubtedly protects a lot of the women in Sanctuary. While his track record on consent and his wives walks a fine line morally he does appear to support equality when it comes to his fighting force.

In the comics “Tara”, the character Arat is based on, plays a pretty big role in the Saviors’ activities. The show has never backed away from giving women roles as serious fighters. So hopefully they will give Arat a similar story arc to the comic and show fans another side of what life can be like for women in Sanctuary.
