The newest Star Trek television franchise has been delayed yet again. This could be a good thing for The Walking Dead’s Sonequa Martin-Green.

As soon as casting news dropped that The Walking Dead’s Sonequa Martin-Green had been hired as the lead character in the newest iteration of Star Trek, fans of The Walking Dead feared that this might mean the end of Sasha. Now, some outlets are reporting that Martin-Green’s contract with The Walking Dead bars her from appearing in another series at the same time. But her contract is not what’s delaying Star Trek: Discovery.

Star Trek: Discovery has had a bumpy road. Last summer at the Star Trek 50th Anniversary SDCC press panel Discovery’s executive producer Bryan Fuller said that the plan was for the first episode to air in early Fall 2016, with the rest of the series available via the CBS All Access streaming service in early 2017.

Do the math on that one. The show hadn’t even been cast yet. How could it possibly air in Fall 2016, let alone early 2017? Production was delayed again until late Spring 2017, and as of Wednesday the show is now without an official premiere date.

With all of the delays attached to Star Trek: Discovery, it’s possible that Martin-Green can continue with The Walking Dead a bit longer.

I’d like to think there is a way for Martin-Green to be a part of both shows, especially since Star Trek: Discovery has already been delayed. If the shooting schedules don’t overlap, it would be great to see her continue to be a part of The Walking Dead, especially with her role at the Hilltop. Sasha and Maggie make quite a team, and seeing them continue that partnership would be a lot of fun.

Of course, the allure of the lead role in a franchise is quite understandable. The Walking Dead fans appreciate Martin-Green’s time as Sasha, and we’ll be excited to see her in her new role on Star Trek: Discovery, too.
