Say cheese, Rick! The Walking Dead showrunners promise that we’ll see Rick smile in the second half of Season 7.
It has been a while since there has been anything to smile about on The Walking Dead. Yes, it was fun from a viewer’s perspective watching Negan bounce Judith on his knee after playing with the faucet, but from the characters’ perspective there’s nothing to smile about when Negan is around.
That’s all about to change according to The Walking Dead showrunner Scott Gimple. After such a dark and bleak first half of the season, it’s time to see Rick Grimes smile. This is welcome news, of course, but Gimple doesn’t say how long that smile will last.
We’ve seen quite a few moments of levity on The Walking Dead, and this certainly won’t be the first or last time we see Rick smile. When our group has felt safe, they allow themselves to laugh. We’re only human—sometimes laughing is the best way to cope with impossible situations. Two great examples of this concept are when Tara finds herself at the Oceanside community and can’t stop cracking jokes, and when Carol meets King Ezekiel for the first time. Both women had to laugh because there wasn’t anything else to be done at the time.
At present we have a few clues about the second half of Season 7, but Gimple promises that the midseason premiere is packed with action and surprises. It also has a Rick Grimes smile: “Before the end of that very first episode back, you will see Rick Grimes smile.” Keep in mind, of course, that we don’t know how long that smile will stay on his face.
