Jesus has been loyal to Gregory until now. But in The Walking Dead midseason premiere “Rock In The Road” he finally stood up against Gregory and joined Team Family.

Gregory and Rick don’t have the best history. So it was optimistic at best to think that Rick and Gregory’s meeting in The Walking Dead midseason premiere would go Rick’s way. Rick gives some great speeches, but they’re wasted on Gregory.

Gregory made it clear that he is not going to support Alexandria’s insurrection. He doesn’t want Maggie and Sasha to live there. And he definitely doesn’t want Rick and the others being seen at The Hilltop by The Saviors.

But this time, Jesus didn’t make excuses for him and try to smooth things over between the two groups. Finally, Jesus stood up to Gregory and called him out.

Jesus has known for a long time that Gregory is a terrible leader. But he doesn’t want to be a leader himself so he let Gregory be in charge and tried to run interference and lessen the damage that Gregory did. But as Sasha told him in Season 7A, he needs to do more. He needed to step and start to an active part of the leadership at Hilltop. In “Rock In The Road” he did.

Gregory can’t be trusted. He almost betrayed Maggie and Sasha and turned them over the Saviors once. He is unpredictable and he’s only interested in protecting himself. Rick and the other can’t allow a loose cannon like that to stay in control at Hilltop. They need the Hilltop too much in the war that’s coming.

Maggie Steps Up

It looks like Gregory’s time as the leader at Hilltop is about to end. Enid managed to rally the people of Hilltop to fight against the Saviors. But, they want Maggie to lead them. Jesus and Sasha can teach them to fight. And he will be a great person to support Maggie and help her lead the Hilltop. Sasha will be there to help too.

Rick needs a leader at Hilltop that he can trust and who will work with him. Going to war against the Saviors is going to require a lot of finesse and a lot of secrecy. Maggie will make sure that the Hilltop is ready to fight when Rick needs them. Eventually Maggie will be a great leader for Hilltop. But not yet.

Jesus As Hilltop’s Leader

There’s a problem with Maggie leading Hilltop though. She’s supposed to be dead. Negan thinks she’s dead. Once he knows that she’s alive Negan will go after Rick even harder. It’s safe to assume Negan would kill someone else in Alexandria as punishment for lying to him.

That means Jesus is the logical choice to take over as the leader of Hilltop, or at least be a figurehead. Jesus has great negotiating skills and the Saviors know him. For now Maggie, Sasha and Jesus need to team up to lead Hilltop to keep Rick’s secret.

When Jesus stood up to Gregory and declared allegiance to The Walking Dead’s Team Family ,he became one of the biggest assets that the survivors have. It’s about time he took the next step in picking a side.
