The Walking Dead: Negan and Denny are very different people
The Walking Dead’s latest villain inspires strong feelings across the TWD Family. But could one of Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s past roles explain the legions of Negan admirers? (And yes, this post is meant to be fun and not taken seriously!)
I have a confession to make.
Lately I’ve been binge watching Grey’s Anatomy. I never watched the show when it first aired, and now it happens to be on when I sit down to write so I leave it one while I work.
Imagine my surprise to see Jeffrey Dean Morgan in a guest starring role. Imagine my further surprise when I discovered that Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s character Denny, a patient dying of congestive heart failure, was a total sweetheart. His “guy next door” persona won over everyone who met him, and one of the doctors fell hard for him despite his tragic medical condition. While on Grey’s Anatomy Morgan’s character Denny was, unlike Negan, perpetually vulnerable and he had the look of someone who knew his days were numbered.
Denny is not Negan.
Seeing Morgan’s performance in Grey’s Anatomy got me thinking. Among the Negan admirers are fans who find him attractive. While Negan shares Denny’s good looks, he most certainly does not share Denny’s sensitivity and charm. Negan is certainly charming, but it’s in a more overbearing dictator way. (Or there’s door number 3, in which fans are drawn to anything Jeffrey Dean Morgan does, which is much more likely but not as fun to explore)
Could it be that fans look at Negan and see Denny? Could it be that instead of seeing a man who bashed skulls in with a barbed wire baseball bat, people see kindhearted Denny and forget about Negan’s numerous transgressions?
On this Valentine’s Day it’s important to remember that Negan is not Denny. He might have redeeming qualities, and both men certainly have their charms, but Negan will never be Denny.
