Seeing Winslow in action during The Walking Dead’s “New Best Friends” makes you wonder why we haven’t seen armies of armored Walkers.

When fans caught a glimpse of a Walker wearing armor of some kind on The Walking Dead, speculation abounded as to what they were seeing. What was that armored Walker doing? What was his purpose?

In “New Best Friends” we learn that the armored Walker, named Winslow, was there to be a test of worthiness more than anything else. The Scavengers created the monster to fight someone as the ultimate test in their strange “Up Up Up” system, like a post-apocalyptic bread and circuses. Rick was able to defeat the monster and the win the begrudging respect of the Scavengers’ leader, Jadis.

But why not have a whole army of Winslows? Think about that! It would be an amazing deterrent, so long as you keep control of the situation. (I’m thinking of the Walkers in riot gear at the prison…they’re a good idea until you lose control of them)

Imagine having dozens of Winslows roaming around the perimeter of Hershel’s farm. Build a double fence so they can roam in between them like the police dogs that monitor the perimeters of prisons. If someone breaks through the fence, the intruders run the risk of setting the armored Walkers after them. It’s kind of like Dr. Evil’s pool full of sharks wearing lasers. Enter at your own risk. (If nothing else, it really looks intimidating)

More from Undead Walking

Perhaps Jadis and the Scavengers have more armored Walkers hiding in their vast wasteland community, guarding the trash piles like nightmarish junkyard dogs eager to give chase to anyone who dares enter their territory. Who knows, maybe Winslow will inspire more armored Walkers that can serve as deterrents for other communities.
