If Gregory named all the characters on The Walking Dead
By Susie Graham
Gregory can never remember anyone’s name on The Walking Dead. What if he named all of the characters on the show? What might their names be?
"‘Tis but thy name that is my enemy. What’s in a name? That which we call a rose, By any other name would smell as sweet. ~Romeo and Juliet. Shakespeare."
While that is true, names do make a difference. Our name is part of our identity. It’s who we are. The spelling of our name. The pronunciation. I was a teacher for many years and I was always very careful to ask students what name they used and/or how to pronounce their names properly.
Instead of calling names on the first day of school, I went around the room at the end of the period and asked the students to tell me their names and I made notes on nicknames and pronunciation. They didn’t have to have part of the first day of school include correcting the teacher about their name.
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to have a different name? Were you supposed to be named something else before you got your name as a baby? I was supposed to be a Karen.
Gregory doesn’t take the time to remember anyone’s name. He has called Maggie Marsha, dear and now Margaret. He has called Rick by names that are derivatives of his name, but not names that Rick uses for himself: Rich and Ricky.
How might the world of The Walking Dead be different if we heard the characters names from Gregory’s mouth before we knew their real names? I asked some of our Twitter followers that question:
The Tweet about Winslow is what gave me the idea for this silly post. It is hilarious! We’re all Gregory at times. My mother is Gregory all the time when talking about people in our family. She says Billy, Johnny, Jimmy, Bryan (all grandsons, sons, brothers names) when trying to talk about one of the male people in the family, usually getting to the right name eventually.

I hope one of these days we hear someone on The Walking Dead call Gregory George or Greg or maybe Harry. Winslow? A rose by any other name, right?
