In The Walking Dead’s latest episode “Hostiles and Calamities” Dwight hit a major turning point. Is he ready to turn on Negan and help Rick and the survivors?

Dwight’s been a tough character to feel any sympathy for so far. He stole Daryl’s bike and crossbow. He attacked the survivors. With Daryl’s crossbow he killed Dr. Denise. And then he shot Daryl and kidnapped him. He’s not a person that The Walking Dead fans have felt a lot of empathy for.

But Dwight’s story has been revealed throughout season 7 in bits and pieces. In “Hostiles and Calamities” Dwight’s story finally came together in a way that couldn’t help but touch the hearts of fans. One of the recurring themes in the show is that no one’s hands are clean in the new world. That’s definitely true for Dwight.

Dwight realized that Sherry was the one who let Daryl go as soon as he saw the small note in Daryl’s cell. After he received the beating he knew was coming for Daryl’s escape he told Negan that he knew where Sherry would go. He went to their old house and she had been there and left a heartbreaking letter for him. Not sure if Dwight would turn her in or kill her she ran.

Back at The Sanctuary he told had an out of character discussion with Dr. Carson, who told him that people do what they have to do to survive. He said that having a good heart is not possible in the world now. Dwight seemed to agree with that, because he set Dr. Carson up to be killed by Negan for helping Sherry and Daryl escape.

Dwight’s definitely not a good guy. But is he ready to flip on Negan now that Sherry’s gone? He and Daryl have always had a connection. Will he seek out Daryl and join Rick’s army as they take on Negan? Was he only staying at The Sanctuary to protect Sherry and be near her?

Even though Dwight has managed to shift any suspicion of his involvement in letting Daryl go and Sherry leaving by setting up Dr. Carson he’s still not totally safe. Dwight told Negan that Sherry ran from him into a group of walkers and got torn apart. If for some reason Negan or the other Saviors ever come across Sherry Negan will know that Dwight lied to him. And he will kill Dwight.

Now that Sherry has gone there’s no reason for Dwight to continue living under Negan’s oppressive rule. Sherry’s departure may be exactly the catalyst he needed to actively try to destroy Negan. He could go to Rick and offer his help. Now Negan trusts him, so Dwight could use that to his advantage to help Rick destroy Negan.

Dwight proved in The Walking Dead “Hostiles and Calamities” that he can be a totally cold killer. He expertly set up Dr. Carson knowing Negan would kill him. He could set Negan up the same way. But will he? It wouldn’t be too much of a surprise if he goes to Rick or Daryl and tries to make a deal with the survivors.
