It’s no secret that Rosita has been going through a lot in The Walking Dead season 7. Star Christian Serratos explains her volatile transformation.

Rosita has been through a lot of trauma over the past two seasons of The Walking Dead. As if the zombie apocalypse wasn’t enough, she also had to contend with losing her relationship with Abraham after he started showing interest in Sasha, as well as watching Negan smash Abraham’s head in with a bat. Things don’t get much worse than that.

It’s not surprising, then, that after Rosita mourned Abraham’s death, her attitude started to change. Suddenly she became angry, and hell bent on revenge. She pressured Eugene into making a bullet for her, and despite his warnings and Father Gabriel’s concerns, she tried to use that bullet with disastrous consequences.

In a new interview The Walking Dead star Christian Serratos explains Rosita’s personality shift.

Serratos was thrilled to explore her character’s rage as we see “what trauma will do to her.” She knows that sometimes the characters change in ways that aren’t what fans expect, and that’s what makes it even more fun. “And the fans aren’t used to seeing her being as outspoken as she has been, and it’s a little sharp–she’s being a little sharp.”

In the latest teaser for this week’s “Say Yes” Rosita and Tara have a conversation that ends with Rosita going off on her own to find guns while Tara contemplates revealing Oceanside to the group. Rosita’s desire to avenge Abraham’s death is turning into an obsession that won’t end until Negan is dead. However, her approach is likely to cause more harm than good.

As for her relationship with Sasha, Serratos hints that fans will see where that ends up. While the women exchanged a nod early on, they have cooled off a lot in recent episodes. “That’s a possibility–seeing this volcano explode, we’re seeing the tension, I think that’s interesting, we’re seeing this tension, we’ll see where it builds to.”

The Walking Dead airs Sundays at 9pm on AMC.
