Eugene may not have all of those fancy degrees he was talking about, but he has enough knowledge to get into Negan’s good graces.

The Walking Dead’s resident chameleon Eugene knows how to fly under the radar and receive protection from the rest of the group. In “Hostiles and Calamities” we see Eugene stepping into a new role, proving that although he’d prefer being protected, he’s mostly capable of taking care of himself.

The truth is that we still don’t really know much about Eugene’s past. Eugene is like that teenage boy who pretended to be a doctor and got away with it. When you hear stories like that you sit back and wonder how something like that could ever happen, and yet it did happen.

Eugene is the adult version of the teenager who pretended to be a doctor. He talks a good talk and he knows enough to back up his stories.

Now, we still know nothing about his background, but regardless of the degrees he holds (or doesn’t hold) he was still able to come up with the molten metal Lead Head Walkers, and he was able to go all Bill Nye with the cold medicine in order to manufacture pills for Negan’s wives. He was also smart enough to not give them the pills in the end, deciding to stay in Negan’s good graces rather than rock the boat.

So what this means is that Eugene may not be who he says he is, but unlike most people, he’s really good at pretending to be someone else and he has the know-how to pull it off. What this means is that Eugene will be safe until he gets caught, but by then it might not matter anyway. He will have done enough for Negan to have earned his place at the Sanctuary.
