The Walking Dead episode “Say Yes” was full of Walkers, but did anyone die in the episode? Let’s break it down.

Four episodes into the second half of The Walking Dead season seven and we haven’t really seen a lot in terms of casualties. These four episodes have been disastrous for Walkers, but we haven’t seen any major deaths, with the exception of Dr. Carson in last week’s “Hostiles and Calamities.”

That trend continues through “Say Yes.”

This week Michonne and Rick went on a supply run that was more like the apocalyptic version of Date Night. Along the way they found the cache of all supply caches, but they had to fight off dozens and dozens of Walkers, including one that started firing its gun at Michonne after getting snagged in some rebar.

Lots of Walkers died in this episode, but no cast members met their maker.

It’s important to note that this is the second episode of 7B that is helmed by The Walking Dead executive producer and FX guru Greg Nicotero. He also directed the midseason premiere, “Rock in the Road,” which had one of the best Walker scenes in it in recent memory. In that episode, a herd of Walkers was decimated in a matter of seconds as Michonne and Rick drove two cars along either side of the road with a wire in between, effectively slicing through the herd in just a few seconds. What this tells us is that Walkers, even in large numbers, aren’t the terror they were when the apocalypse began. The surviving groups have found ways to tame the herds and build communities that are relatively safe from the threat of Walkers, making the chief concern other people.

As we approach the season finale, there’s no question that the death toll will rise. As Rick told Michonne, there will be losses on all sides in this battle against the Saviors. That’s unavoidable. It’s what you do moving forward that counts.
