In The Walking Dead “Say Yes” Rick tells Michonne that she has to be strong enough to go on without him. But can they live without each other when one of them inevitably falls?

Rick gave another one of his inspirational speeches on The Walking Dead this week in “Say Yes”. But this one was to Michonne. After his near-death experience Michonne very nearly became walker chow herself. In that instant when she thought that Rick was dead she decided she didn’t want to live without him.

Rick told her that going forward she has to be strong enough to survive without him. And that he will have to be strong enough to survive without her. They are living and working for something bigger than themselves now. They are fighting for a new world where Carl and Judith and Maggie and Glenn’s baby can grow up without threats like Negan and The Saviors.

But the cost of the future that they want for the next generation will be their lives. At some point, possibly in the battle against Negan, they will fall. And most likely one of them is going to have to pick up the pieces and go on. That person will have to continue to be a leader. Rick is ready to go on without Michonne if he has to. Is Michonne ready to go on without Rick?

Judging by what happened in “Say Yes” she may not be. When she saw the walkers surrounding something tearing it apart and assumed it was Rick she dropped her sword and seemed to give up. After already losing her son and other people she loved Michonne may not be able to come back after losing Rick.

Life After Loss

Everyone on The Walking Dead has lost people they love. But how many times can someone come back from devastating loss without becoming an empty, emotionless shell? That’s the real question. Carol is struggling with that right now. When she finds out about Abe and Glenn she may decide getting revenge is worth losing herself for.

Rosita and Sasha are struggling too. Sasha lost Bob, then Tyreese, and now Abe. Sasha struggled to come back from losing both Bob and Tyreese. Now she seems ready to die in order to avenge Abe. Rosita doesn’t seem like she is going to come back from losing Abe. She is ready to die avenging him rather than live without him.

But Maggie, who arguably has suffered more loss than anyone on the show, is continuing to move forward. Even though she’s now lose everyone in her family and Glenn she found the strength to go forward. She will do whatever it takes to live and to keep Glenn’s baby alive.

More from Undead Walking

Rick would be able to carry on if he lost Michonne. It would be difficult but he would do it because he would do anything to give his kids a future. Hopefully Michonne realizes now that she does have the strength to go forward if she loses Rick.

With the battle against Negan and The Saviors heating up on The Walking Dead there is no way to know who will make it out of this season and who won’t.  Those left standing are going to have to find the strength to keep going.
