5. Pau Gasol

The seven foot tall San Antonio Spurs center Pau Gasol won the Rookie of the Year Award in his very first season in the NBA. Despite his height, he’s very quick on the court. Over the years, he’s managed to capture several medals and awards, including being a two time NBA champion. But it’s not just his size and physical skills which make Gasol valuable. He’s got an incredible mind as well.

When Gasol was a small child and first learned about Magic Johnson getting AIDS, it crushed him. He decided to become a doctor with the hope of one day developing a cure for the AIDS virus. As a young adult, he enrolled in medical school at the University of Barcelona. There he studied medicine, but left because his basketball career was obviously starting to take off.

Although Gasol is enjoying a career as a basketball star, he maintains a strong interest in medicine. He commonly goes to the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles. Gasol had taken a particular interest in scoliosis, even observing a team of doctors performing surgical treatment on a young person afflicted with the disease.

As far as trying to understand a zombie virus, there wouldn’t be a more capable athlete than Pau Gasol.
