One of the biggest events in season 3 was Merle kidnapping Maggie and Glenn for The Governor. In “When The Dead Come Knocking” Glenn takes a pretty bad beating from Merle. He is duct taped to a chair and unable to move his arms when Merle throws a walker in the room with Glenn and leaves.

Glenn improvises and tried to move objects around the room into the walker’s path to buy himself time. Then he backs up against the wall and uses his bodyweight to smash the chair into the wall. It finally breaks and he is able to rip himself free from the scraps of the chair. Just as the walker is on him he is able to twist his arm free and jam a large sharp splinter from the chair pieces into the walker’s brain.

Before this Glenn knew how to kill walkers but he had not really been in a one on one fight with a walker. Especially not incapacitated by being taped to a chair. Glenn proved that he had what it took to survive in this scene. Even though it took him some time to come to terms with his feelings about it after it was over Glenn become a true survivor in that fight.
