In the latest episode of Talking Dead following The Walking Dead “The Other Side,” guest Steven Ogg speculates about Simon’s previous line of work.

We know what Negan did before zombies walked the Earth, but on Sunday night’s episode of Talking Dead, Steven Ogg offers some insight into Simon’s past before the apocalypse began.

Past occupations have always intrigued the TWD Family. Some of the characters had well-defined pasts. Rick was a sheriff, Shane was the deputy. Hershel was a veterinarian. Glenn delivered pizza.

Some characters have remained mysterious. Daryl kept his past a secret for years until he revealed it one night on the run with Beth.

Steven Ogg had some ideas about his character on the show after a conversation he had with showrunner Scott M. Gimple. During that conversation they came up with the sense that Simon was the kind of guy who, like the guys in The Big Short, sold subprime mortgages to unsuspecting customers. The idea was that Simon is the kind of guy who could justify doing bad things to people, even though he knows that it’s wrong.

That helps to explain Simon’s close relationship with Negan, and the long leash Negan has him on compared to some of the other Saviors. Simon has bought into the Negan system, and he is one of Negan’s most trusted men. It makes sense that Simon was already doing bad things before the apocalypse because it makes it easier for him to fit into the Negan way.
