It isn’t often that we get to say that there was a good death on The Walking Dead, but “Something They Need” had one of those moments.

One of the reasons we write posts about the people who died on The Walking Dead is that there are casual fans who don’t watch regularly, and they like to know if someone died. In most cases, though, we write these posts to discuss the episode and how a death impacted the story, when applicable. Just because it’s The Walking Dead doesn’t mean someone died.

With that in mind, let’s talk about episode 715, “Something They Need.” (Here’s your obligatory spoiler alert if you haven’t watched the episode yet)

There was one big death in “Something They Need” and it’s one that deserves some discussion.

In the episode we find Sasha in the same cell that Daryl was in during his stay at the Sanctuary. We don’t know what happened between the time she arrived at the Sanctuary with guns blazing and this point, but here she is. She gets a visit from Savior David and she asks for water. David says he’ll get the water, but only if she begs him for it. His intentions with her become abundantly clear when he starts touching her shoulder and ripping her collar.

That’s when Negan arrives. No one would think of Negan as the knight with his shining barbed wire, but as it turns out, rape is a capital offense at the Sanctuary and Negan is judge, jury and executioner. He slides a giant knife through “Rapey Davey’s” throat, in beneath one ear and out beneath the other.

We don’t know a lot about Rapey Davey but this is a very intriguing moment for Negan. We know that Negan has quite a few wives, but we also know he never forces them to be with him. He just likes having lots of wives even if it’s in name only. (Ego at its finest, right?) There has been a lot of discussion about Negan and kids, and now it would seem that in the midst of all of the crazy, Negan lives by a set of rules, and chief among those rules is that rape is punishable by death.

Killing Rapey Davey does not make Negan a good guy, nor does it excuse his inexcusable offenses. But he did “rescue” Sasha from a predator, and that is something to consider.

This scene is bound to trigger lots of discussion, and it will be interesting to see what other fans thought of this moment. Be sure to leave your take in the comments!
