Negan had some eye opening experiences on the season finale of The Walking Dead. Chief among them: Seeing Maggie alive.

In the middle of the Battle for Alexandria, Negan pops up from behind a car in time to see Maggie leading the forces from the Hilltop, and he’s momentarily taken aback in the middle of a fight he wasn’t expecting to break out.

“The widow is alive, guns ablazin’!”

As with most of Negan’s lines, his shocked exclamation is funny. But there’s more to it.

Seeing Maggie alive has a bigger meaning for Negan. The fact that Maggie is alive means that Rick and company have been lying to him since the very beginning. It is proof positive that Rick’s deception has been going on from the start.

While Negan thought he had Rick under his thumb, Rick had actually been keeping things from him the whole time. Maggie was supposed to be six feet under in one of those three graves in Alexandria, but there she was, healthy and leading the Hilltop resistance.

When the dust finally settles for Negan, he will likely need to call a meeting with all of his bosses. How is it that Simon didn’t know Maggie was alive and well at the Hilltop? (This puts Gregory in the crosshairs, of course, which is probably why Gregory left the Hilltop so suddenly) Did Gavin know that Ezekiel was going to join Rick? Did he know Ezekiel had a tiger? How is it that his men missed so much?

Negan called his people together and said they’re going to war, and there is nothing that will stop that war from happening. But Negan now realizes that he didn’t know everything he thought he knew. While Jadis and the Scavengers might have revealed that Rick had been collecting guns, she only knew so much.

There is a big, gaping hole in Negan’s network of knowledge, and if he wants to have the upper hand in All Out War, he will need to start filling those gaps because he doesn’t have as much control as he thought he did.
