Sonequa Martin-Green talks about the timing of her departure from The Walking Dead and being hired for Star Trek: Discovery.

There’s always so much that happens behind the scenes of a television show that can’t be discussed until the show has wrapped for the season finale. The Walking Dead is certainly no exception, and now that the seventh season has ended Sonequa Martin-Green is talking about learning Sasha’s fate and getting the call about Star Trek: Discovery.

Though it seemed from a viewer’s perspective that Sonequa Martin-Green took the job on Star Trek: Discovery and that led to Sasha’s demise on The Walking Dead, the reality is that Martin-Green learned Sasha’s fate first, and then she got the big phone call:

"It couldn’t have worked out more perfectly, because what was happening on Walking Dead was already underway. It was the path. It was definitely in place. And then as we were going into the very end of the season, the very end of our shoot for the season — that’s when the opportunity for Star Trek came. And so I know some people might think that I left Walking Dead to do Star Trek, but it did not happen that way. It was after Walking Dead was already ending that the opportunity for Star Trek came."

Fans often wonder what happens to their favorite actors after they leave The Walking Dead. For many actors, the opportunity to make appearances at conventions shores up the time between gigs. Other actors get married and have babies, like Steven Yeun did after Glenn was killed.

However, there wasn’t much time for Martin-Green to catch her breath:

"I didn’t know what I was going to be doing next. And when Star Trek came I thought, Oh my goodness! This is…unspeakable. Like, what?? It’s going from such a goliath that reaches so many people in such a profound way, to a legacy. So basically going from legacy to legacy. Because Star Trek has definitely been printed in the hearts of so many people and has been since the ‘60s, obviously. To go from such a favorite show, to arguably the most favorite show of all time, it [laughs] I still think I’m catching my breath."

Even though comic book readers already suspected that Sasha’s fate was sealed, it’s nice knowing that things worked out the way they did for her.

Of course, with Star Trek: Discovery shooting in Toronto, Martin-Green will have to get used to some pretty cold weather after spending so much time in the hot Atlanta sun.
