9) Shane Betrays Otis

One of the most infamous Walking Dead betrayals of all time took place early on in Season 2. Shane Walsh and partner Otis are escaping from a herd of walkers, with Shane walking with a limp after injuring his leg. Walsh notices Otis is moving fairly slowly and breathing hard, struggling to keep up pace to get away from the Walkers.

Shane decides to make a decision on the spot and turns to Otis telling him “I’m sorry”, before shooting him in the leg. He then wrestles Otis on the ground to make sure he can’t get back up, and leaves Otis in all his agony as zombie bait. Shane returns to the farm a changed man after the incident, shaving off his hair.

It was this moment that would ultimately come to define the rest of Shane’s life on The Walking Dead. There was no turning back, for the first time, Shane saw what he was truly capable of and accepted it. Otis would never return to Hershel’s farm or the series in general, meeting his fate at the zombie horde. No flashbacks or visions either.

Shane betraying Otis would not be his last, not by a long shot. One might say Shane was the quickest of the group to adapt to a new world. He saw Otis as just a means to an end and once his necessity waned so did Shane’s patience.
