7) Spencer Betrays Rick

Spencer tried to pull a fast one and take back the Alexandria community from Rick’s control. During a seemingly friendly game of pool by two gents, Spencer implied that Negan should take Rick out and get a more agreeable leader in place. Namely Spencer. Negan was all smiles and played along, getting Spencer’s guard down. It was then Negan questioned Spencer to why he (Spencer) doesn’t just take Rick out and needs him to do the dirty work. Before an impromptu Negan knife attack would end Spencer’s time on The Walking Dead.

A sort of double betrayal if you will. Spencer tried to usurp Rick’s governorship while Rick was away by going over the chains of command to Negan. Only to be double crossed by new pal Negan. What Spencer didn’t realize was that Negan didn’t care if Rick didn’t like him. He knew Rick respected the Saviors’ strength. Rick would do anything to keep his people alive even if he utterly despised Negan. Spencer would be a political type, not the leader Negan needed to keep Alexandria in line.

Negan saw it as a favor to Rick to remove Spencer’s place entirely in the community, keeping Rick focused on the task at hand. Getting stuff for the Saviors in a timely manner, no internal distractions.
