It took awhile but The Walking Dead finally gave Glenn and Abe the eulogies they deserved in the season finale.

Losing Glenn and Abe in The Walking Dead season 7 premiere were arguably the biggest losses that Team Family had suffered in a long time. Glenn’s death was especially brutal because was one of the few remaining original Atlanta survivors. And it felt like fans never really got to say goodbye.

That was intentional, so that fans would understand what the characters were going through. Loved ones were suddenly gone and there was no time to mourn. But the finale featured beautiful tributes to both Glenn and Abe that allowed fans to finally say goodbye to these beloved characters.

There are rumors that Glenn may appear in a flashback or dream sequence when Maggie gives birth, but that’s still a long ways off. First the survivors have to make it through the war against Negan and The Saviors.

So until then the callbacks and tributes in season finale, “The First Day Of The Rest Of Your Life” will have be enough for fans. And they were certainly emotional tributes.

Sasha and Abe

Sasha got one of the most unique deaths on the show because viewers essentially watched her die. After taking Eugene’s suicide pill she drifted into memories and hallucinations of Abe. Fans got to see some tender moments between the two that previously were unseen. Sasha didn’t want Abe to go with Rick when he took Maggie to The Hilltop. If he and Sasha hadn’t gone he would be still alive.

But in their emotional conversation it’s revealed that neither of them would have chosen to behind. Both of them were warriors who were willing to give everything they had to protect the people they loved. And ultimately they both did. But it was comforting to know that Abe was close to Sasha, at least in her thoughts, as she died alone in the coffin.

Maggie’s Tribute To Glenn

Maggie’s speech to Rick about Glenn was another emotional moment in The Walking Dead finale. She had been struggling to decide whether or not to take The Hilltop to Alexandria to fight. It was a good thing she decided to since Alexandria would have fallen without The Hilltop fighters and The Kingdom.

But when Rick tells her that she made the right decision she gives a poignant monologue that is the perfect eulogy for Glenn. Maggie tells Rick that Glenn made the decision to help Rick way back in Atlant even though he didn’t know Rick. And that decision has made everything that they have possible.

Rick has always been the leader of the group. But Glenn had just much responsibility for the group surviving. Without his decision to save Rick from the tank Rick never would have found his family. Maggie recognized Glenn’s role in the greater story. Rick may be the head of the group, but Glenn was the heart of the group.

Maggie paid tribute to Glenn in the best way possible to honor a fallen loved one on The Walking Dead. And it’s clear from how she is taking over at The Hilltop that she will continue to live Glenn’s legacy of humanity, love, and family.
