This is a tough question. There are many fan theories about how some of these characters may be immune to whatever is causing everyone to reanimate after their death. However, let’s break this down into several chunks.

First of all, Rick is most likely not immune. He had his blood tested at the Center for Disease Control, and if there were anything about his blood that was pure or had some sort of antibodies, odds are that Dr. Jenner would have made a huge deal of it.

The problem is that everyone is infected. Every human being will become a member of the undead after their death unless their brain is damaged. While some take longer to come back from the dead, so far there hasn’t been an exception to the rule.

That doesn’t mean it won’t happen, but humans appear destined to come back. However, animals may have some key to immunity, as they don’t seem to come back like humans do. If I were looking for a ‘cure’, I’d be looking at other primates or mammals for clues.
