9 Problems With The Walking Dead Nobody Wants To Admit: A Counterpoint
By Liam O'Leary
Counterpoint #4: We know what’s going on in the rest of the world.
I suppose this is a misnomer, as we don’t know, per se, how the rest of the world is, but, it’s reasonably safe to assume. By all that we know, the infection is everywhere.
Jules mentions that we know through The Walking Dead and Fear The Walking Dead, that the U.S. and Mexico are in rough shape, but raises the question of the status of everywhere else.
Well, allow me to begin with stating that our neighbors to the north, Canada, are probably in a similar state of destruction in The Walking Dead. As we learn from George Geary in Fear The Walking Dead’s “We All Fall Down”, “Cobalt” was enacted on every major city on the West Coast, from San Diego all the way to Vancouver.
George was also kind enough to inform us that park ranger stations from as far away as The Rockies were silent. A bit of basic geography tells us that, if Vancouver is an indication of how Canada’s going, the infection has spread to at least Saskatchewan. If the infection on the East Coast is akin to how it is on the West Coast, that might put the infection all the way to Montreal.
As for outside North America, while things aren’t certain, that hardly means they’re safe. If you’ve listened to the Radio Waves episodes during season two of Fear The Walking Dead, you’ve heard at least one character intent on heading to Japan. Similarly, during season four of The Walking Dead, we met Clara, a newlywed from Ireland.
What connects these two? Well, these both raise serious concerns. Namely, if the infection started in North America, how many potential carriers traveled around the world and spread it? Let’s face it: Few places in the world are devoid of international travelers these days. It wouldn’t take much for people from the U.S. to travel to London, Paris, or Tokyo before the outbreak hit and spread it to those extremely populous cities while quarantines were still lax.
What’s more, Jules mentions the CDC. If you recall, Dr. Jenner mentioned how he’d heard about a cure being worked on in France, but communication fell silent. Sure, it doesn’t guarantee that France has fallen, but, it certainly suggests that. If that is the case, you can guarantee it was spreading throughout the rest of Europe, Africa, and Asia.
Bad news, indeed.
