During an appearance at Walker Stalker SF, The Walking Dead alum Michael Cudlitz summed up Abraham’s thoughts about Eugene’s recent decisions.

It’s interesting to note how many fans of The Walking Dead are still holding out hope that Eugene isn’t a lost cause. Sure, he says he’s Negan and he’s been Negan his entire life, even before he ever met Negan, but this seems like the exact kind of thing he’d say, isn’t it?

Actor Michael Cudlitz talked about Eugene’s transformation during an appearance at Walker Stalker San Francisco over the Easter weekend. Cudlitz appeared with Josh McDermitt and the topic inevitably came up about Eugene’s betrayal at the end of The Walking Dead’s seventh season. Cudlitz wasn’t surprised about Eugene’s turn:

"I think he’s being very, very true to character. This is exactly the guy I punched in the face at the fire truck. He’s staying alive. Especially if somebody he’s looking for me in protection, and he sees the person he felt could protect him from anything gets killed, what the hell kind of chance does he think he stands in his own head? He’s gonna say no? He’s gonna defy them? He’s gonna somehow beat Negan? He may ultimately poison their entire food supply and kill them all but not today! He’s staying alive!"

It would appear that Michael Cudlitz shares some fans’ optimism, that Eugene will ultimately betray Negan by doing something to the Saviors after gaining their trust. It’s true that Eugene is not the type to stand up to anyone, so joining Negan to stay alive is more preferable than dying.

There has been much speculation about Eugene’s intentions in joining Negan and the Saviors. Some fans don’t want to think that he could have betrayed Rick and his friends, but it sure looks that way.

Fans will have to wait until The Walking Dead returns in October to find out whether or not Eugene has truly turned to the Dark Side.
