“The Carnival Of Doom”

During the season seven episode, “Say Yes”, Rick and Michonne stumbled upon an abandoned school adjacent to a carnival. The school had clearly been used as a safe zone, as it was filled with military rations. The carnival, however, was filled with walkers, including those of soldiers, likely those stationed at the school. This led me to christen the place “The Carnival Of Doom”.

One of the things I like about Fear The Walking Dead is the potential to see the outbreak and the apocalypse at its worst: The beginning. This is when people will be at their most vulnerable, when they’re least adjusted to the walkers, and most afraid of them. We’ve gotten bites (No pun intended) of this during the show, but, not nearly as much as we should. Having the story of The Carnival Of Doom would go a good way to rectifying that.

So much of what we saw in “Say Yes” paints a frightening picture in and of itself. During the episode, Rick attempts to use an abandoned car to block the entrance of the carnival. The car itself has bullet holes in it, and a walker soldier is smashed through the windshield.

A little deduction suggests the driver attempted to get into the safe zone, but was met with resistance by the military. It appears that, while the military was able to stop the driver, it was not before he or she hit one of the soldiers with their car. With the soldier still being there, the evidence points to the safe zone breaking down into chaos not long after.

The beauty of this webisode would be how, because of its setting, it could truly give some classic zombie horror. I’ve addressed criticisms that, for a zombie show, The Walking Dead often doesn’t have the zombies be the greatest threat. This webisode would have it in spades.

You would have a setting that is supposed to be pleasant and fun juxtaposed with terrified, unprepared people being attacked by zombies, with others turning as the webisode progressed.

But, additionally, while what we saw in “Say Yes” painted a frightening picture, it also left a lot of questions. What happened there? When in the outbreak did this occur? Were there any survivors? I think it would really be enjoyable watching this horror unfold and see at least a few of these questions be answered.

If you’ve seen my other articles on the topic of webisodes, you know I love the beginning of the apocalypse as a period. For myself and those like me, this webisode would be particularly enjoyable, and remind people that AMC can do legit zombie horror well when they want to.
