10) Carol and Tobin
It’s all over, it’s all over. Johnny Cash’s lyrics told the whole story during Carol’s morning walkout. Everything had seemed fine the night before, Carol had kissed Tobin with a smile as big as can be. Yet, this return with normalcy and love for Carol was met with internal turmoil and strife. Carol couldn’t accept the idea of caring for someone again the way she once had, to show vulnerability again. She left in the night while Tobin slept soundly like a baby. Happy at the prospects of their fresh relationship.
Season 1’s Carol would have been overjoyed by a Tobin and likely never left his side. Alexandria’s Carol wanted to escape the attachment and responsibility that comes with caring deeply for another. Carol leaves Tobin a simple letter (still better than texting) about leaving, at least not leaving him hanging. The Tobin connection literally convinces Carol to leave the Alexandria camp and life-long friends behind. Erasing an entire storied history on The Walking Dead in one night.
Tobin informed Rick the next day of the letter and took it in stride. Hurt but accepting the reality of the situation. Tobin, surprisingly does not attempt to go look for Carol on her own. Letting her go. At the end of Season 7, Carol returns to the Alexandria community but the relationship has not yet been revisited.
