6) Carol and Ed

Carol’s first husband on The Walking Dead’s first season was of an abusive nature. This was arguably the only season where Carol is truly shown as completely helpless. Her only goal to protect daughter Sophia at all costs. After Ed strikes Carol publicly during an argument, Shane leaps at Ed beating him down. He promises to finish the job if Ed ever lays another hand on a woman at camp, despite being struck, Carol pulls Shane away and cries during the moment.

Later, when Ed’s tent meets a walker, Carol decides to finish off Ed herself ‘from being able to turn’. Though, emotionally she’s taking out all her anger at the constant humiliation and physical abuse from Ed throughout her marriage, both before and during the early days of the apocalypse. She later recalls the relationship when witnessing the unrest within Rick regarding Jessie Anderson. Hinting to Rick she would understand if he wants to do something about it… That he’d be right as rain.

Carol sees Pete Anderson as Ed reincarnated and makes that point clear to viewers and Pete during the start of the Alexandria saga.
