Upon arriving at Terminus, Rick, Michonne, Carl, and Daryl were welcomed by Mary and Alex. Putting on a friendly face, the duo offered the survivors a place to stay and some fresh food as long as they handed over their weapons.
Gareth was the leader of Terminus, which explains why he put his brother Alex in charge of looking over meeting the new arrivals. However, these survivors recognized many of the items being worn or carried by people of the community and immediately got suspicious.
Rick grabbed Alex and held him at gunpoint as they demanded answers for why their friends’ items were being there. When the people of Terminus opened fire on the group, Alex was right in the path of the gunfire.
He begged to be let go, but a bullet went through his head, forcing the survivors to scramble to safety, where instead they were loaded into the train car where they were held like cattle during the break after season 4.
