9. Carol Kisses Daryl

From season 2 episode 5: “Chupacabra”

This episode was a rough one for Daryl. He got pretty badly banged up when Nellie threw him as he was out looking for Sophia. He got attacked by walkers, fell down a steep hillside twice, and had to climb back up the hillside wounded and likely with a concussion. He finally staggers back to the outer edge of the farm where Andrea shoots him thinking he’s a walker. Luckily the bullet only grazed him.

But in this scene he’s in bed in the house after Hershel patches him up. Carol brings him some dinner and thanks him for risking his life to find Sophia. She gently gives him a kiss on his bandaged head. It was a maternal gesture more than a romantic one, but it was what she sensed he needed. Like a child he sulkily tells her to be careful of his stitches. But it’s obvious he was touched by her attempt to comfort him the way he had comforter her.

He turns away from her and says that he didn’t do anything that Shane or Rick wouldn’t have done. She stops and at the door and turns back to him. She tells him that she knows that, and that he’s every bit as good as Rick and Shane. Then she smiles and leaves.

This moment is a favorite because Carol instinctively understood what Daryl needed to hear and she gave it to him.  The same way he gave her what she needed when he told her that Sophia would really like the way Carol fixed up the RV.

It really shows the heart of their relationship which is two people who have survived terrible situations and understand each other in a way that the others in the group can’t.
