8. Carol And Daryl Have A Moment

From season 3 episode 1: “Seed”

In season 3 the group is on the run after the farm gets destroyed by walkers. Rick has finally gotten them to the prison. The prison is the first defensible place they’ve encountered where they can settle for a bit so that Lori can have her baby. But first they have to clear it. The first night they clear the outside yard and camp before heading into the actual prison complex. Carol’s part in clearing the yard was to provide cover with a big rifle. As the group gathers around a fire to eat she brings a plate of food to Daryl, who is standing watch.

She gives him the food and while they are talking she twitches her shoulder which is sore from the rifle’s kickback. He asks her what’s wrong and she tells him. He puts his plate down and massages her shoulder. They almost have a moment, and then Daryl freezes and backs away. Carol half jokingly asks him if he wants to screw around and he gets embarrassed and tells her to stop. They banter a little more.

It’s not a super significant moment but it’s one of my favorites because it’s the first moment they have together that could have turned romantic. It’s one moment of levity in the chaos and hardship that they’ve been living in for a long time. Even though ultimately neither of them makes a move it was a moment that showed the lighter side of their relationship and it was good to see.
