In a recent interview, The Walking Dead alum Michael Cudlitz talks about what was going on in Abraham’s head before he met the business end of Lucille.

Even when you know what’s going to happen, knowing what’s coming doesn’t make watching Abraham’s final moments on The Walking Dead any easier. But what was going through Abraham’s head in those final moments? Michael Cudlitz gives us his opinion about what Abraham was thinking right before he had an up close and personal introduction with Lucille.

Michael Cudlitz sat down in an interview with Skybound Insider along with The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman, and he talked about his character’s demise in the season 7 premiere episode “The Day Will Come When You Won’t Be.”

Here’s what Cudlitz had to say about Abraham’s final moments:

"I think he was praying that it would be him. I think that at this point, at the point we’re at in the end of Season 6, Abraham knows he’s figured out these guys. He knows that this kind of operation to work the way it is, for all of the men to be under his control the way he is, there’s a lay of the land. He sees when Negan is describing what he has to do now, that someone has to pay for this, he knows that he wants it to be him, because he wants to protect everybody else. That’s just in his nature. I think he feels once he is chosen, he really is at peace."

In a lot of ways, Cudlitz is able to put fans’ minds at ease with these words because as hard as it is to know that we’re about to lose a beloved character, it’s also important to remember that Abraham was a soldier, and his personal mission was to protect the people he cared about. Cudlitz is absolutely correct when he says that Abraham was at peace when he knew he was the target instead of someone he cared about.

This puts an interesting spin on what happened in the season premiere because Daryl’s reaction to Abraham’s death triggered the events that led to Glenn’s death. However, if Abraham had to sit through someone else being killed, it’s very likely that he would have had the same reaction, and that means someone else would have died.

It’s always fun to speculate what could have happened in the world of The Walking Dead, but in this case, it’s nice knowing what one of our friends was thinking right before we lost him.
