Madison made a big decision on Fear the Walking Dead “TEOTWAWKI” but from a political standpoint, it makes perfect sense.

Despite being welcomed to Broke Jaw Ranch (for different reasons) by patriarch Jeremiah, prodigal son Jake and loose cannon Troy, Madison and her kids are facing the disgruntled residents who think they’re freeloading. Madison spends much of Fear the Walking Dead “TEOTWAWKI” trying to ensure her family’s safety, so it shouldn’t be surprising when she raises her hand to volunteer at the end of the episode.

When Madison expresses her concerns about being ostracized by the residents of Broke Jaw Ranch, Otto waves her concerns aside because she is an invited guest. When she expresses that Troy has threatened her son, Jake promises to keep his brother in line, but that doesn’t do much. Madison knows that she needs to make a power move to show the people on the ranch that she wants to be accepted, so she decides to volunteer for a mission with Troy.

Volunteering is a brilliant move from a strategy standpoint. Not only is she going to help find out what’s happening at Outpost Alpha, which is directly tied to the safety of the ranch, but she’s volunteering to go with Troy, which is an olive branch. She’s trying to play nice with Troy, who seems to be drawn to her for reasons we can only hope are a missing-maternal-figure thing. (The Talking Dead guests made it sound much creepier)

Madison needs to show everyone that she and her family are not freeloaders and they’re willing to pull their weight around the ranch, even if that means taking on a dangerous mission. This shows Otto that she is willing to put her life at risk for the betterment of the ranch, and it’s a powerful message.

More from Undead Walking

Madison is trying to gain some leverage in her new community, and this mission will give her lots of goodwill points so long as it doesn’t completely fall apart…. After all, this is the apocalypse and we know all too well that anything can – and will – happen.

Fear the Walking Dead airs Sundays at 9pm on AMC.
