Why has the focus settled so completely on the local, and the outside world (with its potential salvation) been forgotten?

In my opinion, focusing on anything other than the group of characters at hand and getting too involved with anything other than the local groups would be a huge mistake when it comes to the individual comics or shows.
If fans want a look at the outside world, there are ways to do that. Fear The Walking Dead, Telltale’s games, and the side story of The Alien all give peeks into other parts of the world not tackled in the comics or AMC flagship series.
By now, Kirkman and the rest of the people at Image and Skybound are likely hoping that their audience is more invested in these characters than finding any kind of potential endgame to the zombie virus.
While it would be interesting to see an end to the virus, it would also likely signal an end to the series. And nobody wants to even think about that right now. With so much source material left in the comics and a new story developing, hopefully the scope of the story doesn’t change at all going forward.
