Fear The Walking Dead Villains: Who’s The Worst, Part 2
By Liam O'Leary
Brandon (and Derek)
Whereas Marco was an unsavory character long before the dead started to walk, Brandon and Derek were not. That said, simply because they were relatively law-abiding before the outbreak began, doesn’t mean they were good people after.
In fact, the pair turned out to be, really, quite ruthless. Worse still, they turned out to be killers.
And that is why they’re here: Because, more than anything else…they were killers.
Now, I could start with one of the murders we saw Brandon commit, but, I’d much rather focus on the two we didn’t see him commit: Mr. and Mrs. Magana.
As we follow Chris trying to scavenge the Maganas’ restaurant, we see a pair of corpses that, minus the holes in their heads, look rather alive. These people (Who Chris’s searching reveals are the owners of the restaurant) weren’t infecteds: The were alive…until Brandon and his friends arrived.
Why did they kill them? We don’t know, presumably to steal their supplies, but, the better question is: Did they need to?
While we don’t know the circumstances surrounding the Maganas’ deaths, I can’t imagine, had Brandon or his friends simply pointed their guns at them, that they would have put up much of a fight, do you? I honestly think they could have just held them at gunpoint, taken some supplies and left. Killing the Maganas seems excessive.
Of course, murder seems to be a go-to course of action for Brandon.
One might argue pointing his gun at Mr. Suarez when he confronted him, Derek, James, Chris, and Travis was self-defense. Fine.
However, the same can’t be said for how he handled James being shot. Despite the fact that James’ wound was not fatal, simply because he was slowing the group down, Brandon simply deemed James a lost cause, and decided to kill him.
To his credit, Brandon wasn’t completely heartless about the situation, but, it doesn’t undo the fact that he decided to kill one of his best friends out of impatience. Nor, does it undo the fact that the reason he felt the need to be so impatient in the first place was because of his own wasteful behavior. Travis warned Brandon, Derek, and Chris to eat the eggs, not the chickens, because the chickens would keep laying more eggs; They ignored him. Brandon wanted to move on because they’d burned through their food. Ultimately, his, Derek’s, and Chris’s own carelessness led to James’ death!
Speaking of Chris, on the one hand, unlike James, there was no way he was going to survive. By the looks of things, his broken leg was protruding through the skin, there was nothing Brandon or Derek could do for him.
On the other hand, the way Chris was put down looked more like they were shooting a deer they hit with their car, not a friend.
Brandon shot Chris, didn’t say “Sorry” (Like he had for James), then he and Derek walked away, leaving him to rot in the street.
Brandon might not have been a would-be serial killer like Reed, or a brutal gangster like Marco, but, he was still a killer.
Yeah, he might not have been completely heartless, but, he also didn’t seem terribly bothered when he did kill someone. As best as we can tell, he and Derek (At least) gunned down the Maganas in cold blood, he barely seemed to react to killing James (The circumstances of which he caused in the first place), and, he shot Chris and just left him like roadkill in the street.
Brandon and Derek seemed like very callous human beings, people who would kill without remorse. They might not be as bad as Martin but, when you don’t react at all to putting down friends, never mind strangers, you’re not far enough for my taste.
