What could have happened to the resort and the people living there? Rosarito Resort was an ideal shelter at its peak; could it return to the safe-haven it was before?

When we least saw the Rosarito Resort on Fear the Walking Dead, Strand had finished playing doctor and was banished by the other residents. Prior to that, Madison left the resort with Travis and Alicia, and at that point they had allowed more people inside but things were relatively stable. Though only a few days had passed between the time when Strand left the resort and when Strand took Daniel back to the resort, something bad had happened. The place was abandoned and full of Infected. What could have happened?

We know from The Walking Dead that any location that looks to be safe is instantly a target for people who need a place to go. The resort was not well protected, and without a large supply of weapons it was not well defended either. Anyone who had weapons and a strong desire to get in could do so, but clearly things went horribly wrong because it doesn’t look like anyone survived when Strand showed up.

It’s worth noting, however, that the resort looked abandoned when Madison, Strand, Alicia and Ofelia first arrived there. It wasn’t until they started exploring that they found people living there. This time seemed much different, perhaps because there were so many people living there when Strand left, and the gates were open. If there are people still inside, they left the gates wide open.

The resort was such a great place to take refuge, but it’s a big space and it would take a village to defend it. With Strand fighting for his life inside, it’s possible we’ll see him again before the midseason finale. And perhaps we’ll learn more about what happened there.
