Fear the Walking Dead 308 recap: Midseason finale Part 2
Fear the Walking Dead ends the first half of season 3 with “Children of Wrath.” Here’s your complete recap.
Ofelia walks along the fence with her gallon of water. She’s in the middle of the desert. Suddenly she comes under gunfire. She drops her water and runs. We’re back where we last saw her, under attack from the Otto family.
Otto finds her and takes her knife. He takes her to her truck, speaking Spanish to her until he realizes she’s American. She says she’s looking for her fiance in Santa Fe. He leaves her in the desert.
Ofelia gets cleaned up and then goes in to meet Walker. He greets her with food and tells her to get some rest.
Ofelia gets into one of the trucks and Madison stops her before she can drive off. She demands to know what Ofelia did to the people at the ranch and starts beating her.
The next day the people who survived are doing triage and getting rid of the bodies. Jake and Alicia are working the medical tent. Nick is sick. Madison comes in and tells Otto that Ofelia put a powder in their coffee the night before.
Madison leaves with Ofelia, a gun at her head, and she tells Ofelia that Nick is at risk. She says it was only supposed to make them sick.
Inside the diner, Madison has a gun to Ofelia’s head. She learns that they have been infected with anthrax and there is no cure. Walker says she is more of a man than Otto. He frees her because he admires her strength. If Nick is strong he can survive. Walker advises her to leave the ranch but she says they fought too hard to leave. Walker says that will lead to her death.
Strand is still alive at the resort. He has supplies and he finds a cabana. He also finds the Abigail on the beach. He climbs aboard and sees that it is full of Infected. He uses a harpoon to dispatch them quietly, but then he ends up with a gun.
Nick pukes and Alicia greets him. He says this is like old times. Madison returns and says it’s Anthrax. She says she has been talking to Walker. Jake tells Troy to gather the militia and he tells Madison to butt out. He leaves, followed by Alicia and Troy. Outside the three of them talk, and Alicia says she knows where they can get some leverage.
Strand finds a bottle of champs. The boat is dead, but it’s a place to rest for now. He grabs his old jacket and drinks the champagne.
Nick watches Jake as he helps a patient. Jake checks on Nick. Nick says the fluids helped and he thinks Jake needs some rest. He wants to be uncuffed. Nick asks where Otto is and Jake says Nick will be disappointed. This hell they’re in is because of him.
Otto watches while they bury the dead. Nick goes to his cabin and starts prying up the floorboards.
Ofelia goes to the motel to see Walker. Once she’s in his room she tells him about her relationship to the Clarks and to Nick. He never told her it was anthrax, and he turned her into a killer. He reminds her of how he found her dying in the desert, all sunburned. His horse sensed the life in her. She is a woman who faced death and wasn’t afraid. Ofelia says he saved her life. “The debt is paid,” he says.
They are interrupted when fires break out on the ranch. Madison and Alicia hook up the trailer to the truck while Troy and his men run back. Troy manages to get back in the truck as they drive away.
Nick digs and digs, then he goes to find Jeremiah Otto. He goes inside Otto’s house and says that Otto shot up his floor because it had blood in it. Nick pulls a skull out of a bag and asks who it belongs to. Otto says it’s a long story. Nick wants to hear it. Otto says that when the kids were young the local Indians claimed the ranch was on their land. The land was sold to Otto’s family back in the day, but then they wanted it back. The Indian “thugs” killed the cattle. Phil, Russell, Vernon and Otto killed three of them. The skull belongs to Walker’s father. Nick now knows Otto wants the bodies to stay buried. Otto tells Nick to get right with the story. Otto bought the land, and the Indians tried to take it back. Nick says that they will see who can hold the land now.
Madison, Troy and Alicia roll up with their relics. Otto says it’s all BS. Nick asks if he’s scared, and even Troy wonders what’s going on. Walker’s people pull up outside.
Nick shows the skull to Madison and Alicia. Alicia says they’re on the wrong side. Nick lets it slip that Madison knew about Troy killing the Trimbols. Alicia confronts her mother and Madison says she has no idea what she carries.
Strand listens on the radio and finally gets a signal. He starts talking to a Russian cosmonaut about his champagne. The cosmonaut tells him not to give up. The world does not end if he’s still alive.
Madison goes to talk with Walker. She assures him that his relics are unharmed. She offers that they share their resources, they keep the ranch, they live in peace. She presents the skull to him. He says it’s not enough. The skull is not Walker’s father, “It’s an old white man’s shame.” She tells the group he doesn’t care about the relics. He wants the ranch. They have til sundown the next day or they die.
Strand checks the bodies and takes all of the weapons he can find. He loads it all up and then he sets the Abigail on fire. He dons some aviator glasses as he walks out.
While the boat burns, Strand looks back at the flames and then keeps walking.
Nick watches Alicia packing her things. Madison comes in and tells them about Montgomery where she grew up. They never went there but she tells the story of the councilman’s daughter who knew all about when to burn the ballot boxes but he didn’t know when not to drink. The little girl was exhausted, and her mother was a mess. The little girl took the gun from her dad’s dresser and shot him. She says her kids are looking at her the way her mother looked at her after she killed her father. She tells her kids she’s going to talk to Otto about making peace with the enemy. Nick and Alicia are left speechless.
Madison finds Otto nailing boards on his windows. He’s “going Alamo.” The house was built to be a holdout. Supplies are in the basement. He welcomes her family if it comes to that. He pours her a drink. He thanks her for standing by his boys, especially Troy.” She told Jake there was no agreement, but she lied. Otto jokes about his scalp, but she doesn’t laugh. He can’t believe she would give him up after all he did for her. She puts the gun down. She doesn’t want to disappoint her kids. She wants him to kill himself. Otto says that he didn’t live this long by rolling over and die. She reminds him that the ranch is is legacy and if he doesn’t kill himself then they lose the legacy. He won’t kill himself, and he says he had the balls to do what needed to be done. The door opens and it’s Nick. He tells Nick that his mother came there to kill him. Before he can say anything about Madison being like him, Nick kills him with the gun Otto gave him.
Troy and Jake run in to find Madison sitting at the desk with Otto hunched over. The boys load the body into a truck and they take it to Walker. Madison, Nick and Alicia watch from Otto’s house as they drive away.
Later, Madison approaches a coffin in the barn. Later she takes a backpack and meets Walker outside. She gives him the backpack and he opens it. Inside is Otto’s head. He nods and walks away, and she turns and walks away.
