Troy and Nick

In a lot of ways, Nick and Troy are more like brothers than Nick and Chris Manawa ever were. Though Chris came from divorced parents, his parents were loving and supportive. Nick was left without a father and Troy was left without a mother, and the absence of those parental figures shaped both young men in ways.

Nick has spent the past few years doing what he pleases, whether that be leaving his family for a drug binge and disappearing for days and weeks, or leaving his mother and sister during the apocalypse to “find himself.”

Troy has long been used to getting his way. His father hasn’t been able to control him, and his brother wasn’t always around to stop him. While Jake was away at college, Troy was homeschooled and was never around other people. His socialization involved military training and getting what he wanted when he wanted.

When Nick and Troy intersected upon their arrival at the ranch, they butted heads immediately. That’s not surprising given that they’re both used to getting exactly what they want. Nick was protective of his mother, and Troy wanted what Nick had with Madison. (Ironic, considering that Nick kept running from his mother) After getting into a tussle, it seems like Nick and Troy have an understanding now, though neither trusts the other.

Nick knows what Troy did to the Trimbols, but he also sees what Madison is up to in defending him. Nick’s time at La Colonia has shown him that you can’t always control situations or your allies, but when it comes to defending your shelter, sometimes you have to accept things for the greater good. And in this case, it might mean working with Troy.
