Fear The Walking Dead ratings have been lower in season 3A than in past seasons. But the drop in ratings is consistent with the drop in live views that all cable shows have had. With more people turning to late viewing and streaming cable live views are down across the board.

The ratings for Fear have been steady throughout the season. After a season premiere that got over 3 million live views the live views for the rest of the season have averaged about 2.5 million. The live views for the two episodes of the season finale had 2.6 million and 2.4 million live views respectively.

Once extended views were counted both of the finale episodes jumped by 1.5 million each. So total live+3 views for the finale episodes weighed in with 3.8 million views and 3.7 million views respectively. The two strong finale episodes capped off the first half of a season that fans agree is the best season of the show so far.

After season 2 the show brought in a new crop of writers and the change is evident. While the first two seasons of the show seemed disjointed and uneven the third season has been more cohesive. There’s a recognizable narrative storyline this season that the show really needed.

Why Ratings Are Low

It might seem counter intuitive that the ratings are lower when this season of Fear The Walking Dead is the strongest so far. But cable ratings are dropping for all major shows. Millions of people every year are dropping cable subscriptions in favor of streaming their favorite shows on services like Sling TV.

The fact that every episode of Fear The Walking Dead season 3A has gotten more than a million views in extended viewing shows that people are watching the show. They’re just not all watching it on cable. Or on Sunday nights.

The lower cable live views are a consequence of changes in the way that people watch TV. It has nothing to do with the quality of the programming. As more streaming opportunities pop up for consumers with services like Sling TV and the new Amazon Channels subscription-based service it will be common to see live cable viewership dropping. In order to get the true measure of how many fans are watching a show it’s necessary to look at the extended views.
