The Walking Dead season 8 trailer final scene is a time jump
By Sonya Iryna
The final scene in The Walking Dead season 8 trailer is causing a big stir but it’s not foreshadowing Rick’s death. It’s just a time jump.
The Walking Dead hasn’t given fans too many time jumps throughout the series. There was a small jump after the group left Hershel’s farm between season 2 and season 3. And there was a small jump between seasons 3 and 4.
But the biggest time jump of all is coming in season 8, judging by The Walking Dead season 8 trailer that debuted yesterday at SDCC. At the very end of the trailer is a scene showing a much greyer and older Rick lying in bed. There’s also a shot of a cane next to the bed. And that’s the clue that tells fans that’s a time jump.
Comic readers already know that immediately after All Out War there is a time jump of about two years. Scott Gimple said in an interview that the show would probably see a time jump of anywhere from two to five years. In one of the final battles of All Out War Rick injures his leg pretty badly and needs a cane to walk after that. The cane in the final scene of the trailer hints that the show will follow that storyline.
So from that final scene in the trailer it looks like the show will follow the comic and incorporate a big time jump following the end of All Out War. Fans will get to see the major battles of All Out War but then jump ahead without seeing the aftermath of the war and the rebuilding of the communities.
What Fans Won’t Get To See
If there is a time jump of two to five years in The Walking Dead season 8 that means that fans will miss at least one milestone event – the birth of Baby Rhee. Hopefully the arrival of Baby Rhee will be recognized in some flashbacks or an appearance by Steven Yeun or maybe even Scott Wilson.
Fans who are emotionally invested in the birth of Maggie and Glenn’s baby deserve to get to participate in the joy of the birth after going through the grueling sorrow of Glenn’s death.
If the time jump is at least two years then fans will also not get to see the gradual development of a new society where each community is free. Trade between the communities develops. Laws and codes of conduct are created. And a peaceful alliance exists between the communities. For a while the survivors get to stop fighting for survival and get to enjoy a little security.
