Fear the Walking Dead’s cast discussed Frank Dillane’s major haircut on the show. Reportedly, his first haircut in about 10 years according to Dillane!

In an interview with TVLine.com’s Michael Ausiello, Fear the Walking Dead’s cast dished on a major change this past season… Nick Clark’s haircut! According to Frank Dillane, it was literally his first haircut in around 10 years. That’s practically a decade right there. So, you can imagine the curious excitement the cast had upon the monumental moment. Pantene execs must have shed tears for not getting in on the crossover promo action in time.

Dillane said he was happy to cut off his long locks, “It was getting annoying, all long and dreadlockyy, so nice to cut”.

Kim Dickens completely embraced Dillane’s new hairdo, “I just thought he looked so much more beautiful, I didn’t think it was possible”.

Alycia Debnam Carey was similarly hyped, commenting, “We were all excited and counting down the days”.

Fear the Walking Dead’s matriarch Madison Clark reportedly sent photos around to the cast after being the first one in a scene with Dillane. She received a Victor Strand style message back from Colman Domingo, “Well, there’s a boy in there!”

Frank joked about how the very first line after he gets his haircut, Kim had to say “you look like a man”, which which she had fun riffing on. Some of the versions included Madison telling Nick “You look a man transitioning to be a woman”, “you look like a girl”, and “you look like a teen idol”.

Fear the Walking Dead had pondered the haircut before

According to an interview by Josh Wigler ofThe Hollywood Reporter with Fear the Walking Dead showrunner Dave Erickson, the haircut was thought about for a while.

However, they wanted to make sure it was subtle so it didn’t fall into a predictable character motif.

“We’ve been talking about that for a long time. It was tricky, because we’ve seen the hero moments where someone shaves their head and it’s part of a transformative process.

We didn’t want to do that. It’s been done and it’s something of a trope.

The decision to cut his hair was part of his decision to connect with this vaguely new persona that he’s putting on with a purpose. We wanted to see some reflection of that moment, which is why Madison is in the scene and she sees how he looks after.”

Perhaps, Shane’s infamous shaving of his head back in season 2 of The Walking Dead had something to do with it. Trying to make Nick’s haircut his own thing so to speak as to not retread old memories.
