Fear the Walking Dead: Can anyone truly own anything?
Fear the Walking Dead has presented a major ethical dilemma in season 3 and there’s no easy way to choose sides because the water is so murky.
As soon as Fear the Walking Dead introduced the character of Qaletqa Walker, it was clear that the battle for Broke Jaw Ranch was not going to simply be a matter of choosing sides. Given Walker’s ancestry, he believes he holds a claim to the land while Jake Otto has been fighting Walker for years – in court – to prove that the Otto family are the rightful owners.
Now that civilization has collapsed, there’s a question of ownership and the land is now up for grabs, with the winner being the person able to win and maintain control of it.
With civilization gone, and all of the deeds and contracts out the window, does anyone have a right to anything anymore?
In the second season of The Walking Dead, Hershel was living peacefully on his land and ultimately it was a herd of Walkers that drove him from it. If he was alive, could he go back to that land and claim it from anyone who moved in after him?
We haven’t seen a lot of examples of ownership in The Walking Dead, mainly because too much time has passed. No one has been able to stay long on their property. Even Alexandria has been usurped by the people living there now.
So looking again at Fear the Walking Dead, can we determine who the land belongs to? We know Jeremiah Otto and his buddies did some heinous things to Walker’s people before the Ranch was founded. That said, Walker has now retaliated with some awful things of his own. All things being equal, does anyone have a “right” to the land anymore? Or does the land’s owner simply have to be the strongest and most willing to defend it?

We have yet to see how things play out in the second half of season 3, but one thing is for certain in the Walking Dead universe: Things are never cut and dry. There’s always a grey area, and that’s where the real story comes out.
Fear the Walking Dead returns September 10 on AMC.
