The third season of Fear the Walking Dead has given us a great depiction of how the world ended up the way it is in The Walking Dead.

There are so many moments when I watch The Walking Dead where I wonder how things came to be the way they are. How did Negan come to rule the Saviors and build the Sanctuary? What was it really like at Terminus, and what was that moment like when the first person decided to start eating other people? Was anyone taking care of Rick before ultimately fleeing (or getting killed)?

So many questions about the early days, and so few answers.

When it comes to Fear the Walking Dead, the show’s premise has always been the same, but the major difference has always been the time frame; instead of starting out after the zombie apocalypse has started, it showed us how it all came about. (Kind of. I was left wanting more back in LA, but season 3 made up for it)

One of the best aspects of season 3 so far has been the scenes at the reservoir and Broke Jaw Ranch. These are two places that are seen as strongholds, and power is shifting. The dam was being controlled by the late Water Baron who ran the show. He presumably took control of the dam from the authorities, and now Daniel Salazar has control. The Ranch’s ownership is questionable, and now we get to see how the power might shift to someone else if Walker’s attempts to reclaim the land are successful.

Looking at these two locations, it’s easy to see that they’re both very important places and the person who controls them will have a lot of power. This is how you end up with the Negans of the world, but we’re still in a world where the Negans haven’t risen yet. Neither Jeremiah Otto nor Walker nor the Water Baron are at Negan’s level yet, but there is potential. The first ingredient in that recipe is having what other people need, and then building from there. Taking control of the Ranch and the dam are step one.

As we continue the third season of Fear the Walking Dead, we’ll see who ends up winning the battle for supremacy and how that victory plays out for everyone else.
