Fans of HBO’s Game of Thrones were surprised to hear a reference to The Walking Dead on the July 30 episode of HBO’s fantasy juggernaut.

Walking Dead fans were treated to a little inside joke made on the sly during the July 30 episode of Game of Thrones. If you haven’t seen the latest episode of Game of Thrones, there are spoilers ahead.

During a conversation between Jon Snow and Tyrion Lannister, Jon refers to the dangers posed by the White Walkers. “The dead are coming for us all,” he says.

Tyrion, not missing a beat, has his own ideas on the subject: “Why don’t you figure out what to do about my missing fleet and murdered allies, and I’ll figure out what to do about your walking dead men.”

Clearly, Tyrion is referring to the White Walkers, but there’s no mistaking the nod to The Walking Dead in his statement. Not only that, but the line is so typical of Tyrion, who doesn’t seem overly concerned about Jon’s “walking dead men.” (Incidentally, I could see Tyrion, Strand and Negan having their own spinoff)

It isn’t often that television shows like Game of Thrones (which is heavy fantasy) and The Walking Dead (set in a zombie apocalypse several years behind pop culture) can make references to each other, but Sunday’s episode of Game of Thrones employed a tongue in cheek twist of words to give a nod to the only other show on TV that can challenge it in the ratings.
