Cautionary tale: Turning the channel when The Walking Dead could land you jail time. Or more jail time, if you’re already in prison to begin with.

A 30-year-old man in La Vista, Nebraska, was sentenced to a year in jail for assault after he punched someone for turning the channel during The Walking Dead. ironically, David Roze was already in jail on an assault charge, and it was another inmate that turned the channel, leading to the incident that added to Roze’s sentence.

On November 27, 2016, another inmate at the La Vista county jail turned the channel while The Walking Dead was on. Several of the inmates in that wing of the jail were watching, but Roze didn’t take the matter lightly. He lost his temper and punched the inmate, which led to a year added to his prison time. What makes this even more interesting is that Roze was in jail on an assault charge, but the victim didn’t show up for the court case and the case was dismissed. However, Roze remained in jail for his new assault charge. He said later that he felt sorry for what he did.

Incidentally, the November 27 episode of The Walking Dead was the bottle episode “Swear” that followed Tara into the Oceanside community of well-armed women. That community, and their guns, played a very important role in the season 7 finale when Rick, the Hilltop community, and the Kingdom banded together to take on Negan and the Saviors.

As it turns out, it looks like Roze might still be in jail for the season premiere of The Walking Dead when it returns on October 22.
