The letter A has been a recurring theme on The Walking Dead, but the reason it was the letter The Saviors forced Daryl to wear was recently revealed.

Fans of The Walking Dead have seen the letter A used many times on the hit AMC television show. It was the train car they were held in at Terminus, it was painted on Father Gabriel’s church, and Sam Anderson had a stamp with a red A on it.

The letter returned for a role in season 7 of the hit AMC zombie drama when Daryl Dixon was taken by The Saviors in the season premiere and held against his will, forced to be a servant and cleaner at The Sanctuary.

The reason Daryl’s sweatshirt had the letter A on it wasn’t random and it didn’t have absolutely no meaning. The reasoning behind it was revealed in the special features of The Walking Dead: The Complete Seventh Season by writer Angela Kang according to Comicbook.com:

"“It just means a–hole,” Kang said, unsurprisingly simplifying Negan’s savage Savior group. “They’re being juvenile. Like an a–hole and an F and an S for f—face and s—head.”"

Looking back at the situation, it makes absolute sense for these words to be the meaning behind the letters. Given the vocabulary of Negan and the way The Sanctuary is run, it isn’t surprising to see this kind of vocabulary being used for their captives.

"“I thought it meant Aquarius,” Reedus joked, appearing to have been unaware of the notion."

As for the sweats themselves, there was a funny reason for those as well. At first, the show wanted to use jumpsuit style overalls like a factory worker would wear, but Greg Nicotero felt it was too similar to another program.

"“Scott thought it would look too much like LOST,” Kang said."

Of course, fans of the show LOST will remember the khaki colored jumpsuits worn by Dharma Initiative. While paying an homage to that hit ABC drama series would have been great, it is also nice to have a unique feel.
