A rose by any other name

Gemini Stanley on Facebook asks: “Please tell us, what is Negan’s full name?
Our fan group found 2 names online BUT I’d like to hear it direct from the horse. Thanks!”

Ah, this is an age-old question from fans of the comic book series. Whenever a character goes by one name, there is always the question of what their given name is or what they were called before the apocalypse hit.

For Negan, that is still a grey area. Robert Kirkman has revealed that it is a version of the name “Nagus”, which he realized was a character from the television show Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, but put his own twist on it for the comic book series.

Since then, there hasn’t been any official acknowledgement of a full name, but there is a debate as to whether or not Negan is his name at all, or if it is his first or last name.

I know it’s kind of crappy to answer this question with a big ‘I don’t know’, but I like the theory that Negan is his last name and he goes by that because of how unique it is. Plus, it opens the door for more backstory about why he goes by his surname and not his given name.

This was something many fans hoped they’d get a definitive answer for in Here’s Negan, but that sadly didn’t happen.
