You might have heard about the solar eclipse on August 21. Imagine what a solar eclipse would be like in the world of The Walking Dead.

Ancient civilizations used to look up into the sky and watch as the moon and the sun cast shadows upon each other periodically. While the people of those early societies didn’t understand everything that was happening, they knew enough to know that something big was happening. In the world of The Walking Dead, a solar eclipse would be an equally big deal even though there is no longer a way of knowing when to expect them.

August 21, 2017 marks a big day for astronomers as the moon moves in front of the sun for a major solar eclipse. This particular eclipse is a big deal in the United States, as it will be quite visible across the nation. Starting just after 9am PT, people all over will look to the sky (hopefully with special eclipse lenses!) to watch as the moon passes in front of the sun. Over the course of an approximately 90-minute period, the moon will almost completely block the sun in a display that hasn’t been seen in the United States for over three decades.

In the world of The Walking Dead, the calendars are all gone and no one really knows what day it is. Birthdays cease to exist, as do holidays. Not knowing days also means that a solar eclipse would sneak up on you. You wouldn’t know it was happening until it happened, and even then you couldn’t really look at it because you’d be blinded by the sun.

The solar eclipse is yet another example of life going on in the zombie apocalypse, and there is no way to see it coming. (At some point a calendar should be developed, but that’s a story for another day)

This major scientific event reminds us that thousands of years ago there were people looking up into the sky to watch solar eclipses and even in the middle of a zombie apocalypse people would be looking to the skies. It may feel like civilization has disappeared in the world of The Walking Dead, but in many ways events like a solar eclipse bring characters closer to their ancestors than ever before.
