The Walking Dead: One major benefit of a zombie apocalypse

One thing is for sure: If the world of The Walking Dead was a reality, it would be bad for people but it would be like hitting the reset button for the global environment.

It’s hard to believe that there could be an upside to a global zombie outbreak, but after a great deal of consideration I think I’ve finally found one. While humanity would face a certain decline in population, the majority of the planet’s animals would be able to recover their populations. Animals that were going extinct from habitat destruction would have an opportunity to bounce back, unimpeded from human intervention. Though it would really suck for humans, it would be a great thing for Mother Earth.

Think for a moment about the areas of the planet facing the largest amount of pollution: Oceans, watersheds, the ever-shrinking rainforests; all of these areas would have a chance to recover from pollutants and eventually become thriving ecosystems once again. They would be pristine without humans messing things up with their cars and factories and landfills.

Not all animals would be safe, of course. Walkers might be able to catch certain animals like unsuspecting dogs and horses and slow-moving cows, but the vast majority of animals are able to escape a chase. With natural predators serving as their only enemies, most animals will thrive. Abandoned cities will become new territories for these animals, and with their populations left unchecked it would quickly be the humans who are outnumbered. Humans hunting for food won’t even be a problem for these now-thriving populations because the lack of refrigeration will require things to be caught and consumed immediately.

From an ecological standpoint, a zombie apocalypse isn’t such a bad idea. Eventually, we can hope that the mystery of the zombie outbreak will be solved and that humans will bounce back from the brink. By that point the world will be ready to once again provide for a much smaller population of humans, refreshed and replenished.
