The Walking Dead’s Steven Ogg wants to play the Joker
As news of a standalone Joker origin movie came about, one actor from The Walking Dead is throwing his name into the hat for consideration for the part.
Steven Ogg is a very talented guy. The Walking Dead has benefited from his gleefully evil take on Simon, Negan’s dastardly right hand man who delights in terrorizing everyone he meets. But Ogg has his sight set on a new dream role, stating that he’d totally take it if the offer came his way.
Warner Bros is looking at creating an origin story about one of DC Comics’ most infamous villains: The Joker. Though nothing has been confirmed yet, Martin Scorsese is already attached to the film as a producer with Todd Phillips in the director’s chair. This movie is getting a lot of buzz because it’s set outside of the DC Extended Universe where we see movies like Wonder Woman and Justice League. That means that Jared Leto, who portrayed the Joker in 2016’s Suicide Squad, wouldn’t be playing Joker in this new movie.
Enter Steven Ogg, who would love a shot at this role. He spoke with CinemaBlend about his thoughts:
"“It’d be fun. I mean, it seems to screw everyone up, whoever does it. They end up going a bit crazy, except if you look at Nicholson’s Joker. But what I was reading, and I’d love to do it, is the younger, like ‘how The Joker became The Joker’ is what they’re working on. So I’d assume it would be a younger person. But that type of character, there certainly would be a lot of interesting things to explore with him. I would love to do my own different take on it, on him. So yeah, if you’re offering it to me, I’ll take it.”"
Imagining Steven Ogg as the Joker is fun enough, but to see him in action would be great. He certainly has enough experience to be able to play the charming and charismatic villain who will turn around and kill you on a whim. Simon and the Joker aren’t that much different in that sense. And though nothing is in the works as yet, it’s nice to think that Ogg has an eye on this iconic role.
