In taking a look back at previous seasons of The Walking Dead, it’s clear that hindsight plays a big role in appreciating the earlier seasons.

Sometimes when you find yourself in the middle of a season of television, it’s hard to really appreciate what you’re seeing until you take a look back. The problem occurs both with traditional weekly television shows and while binge watching. It’s hard to really have any focus when you’re in the thick of the action, and when things slow down you lose focus. Season 2 of The Walking Dead, anyone? But now that some time has passed, season 2 really doesn’t seem that bad.

During The Walking Dead Marathon leading up to the October 22 season 8 premiere, I turned the television on in time to see Rick and a very young Carl finish off Shane. Not once, but twice, of course. It’s one of the watershed moments on the show because Shane’s death was a turning point in so many ways. Not only did Carl play a huge role, but the gunshots caught the attention of the Walker herd, which led to the exodus from the farm.

I remember watching season 2 thinking that it was slow. I know I wasn’t alone. The tone was very different from the first season, and even though there was a ton of character development taking place, it still felt slow.

Looking back, though, I now see that season 2 was much more compelling than I thought it was back then. We know so much more now about the characters, so going back and watching for the little details makes it a whole new show. Lori gets worried about Rick and Carl when they don’t come back right away. She is also worried about Shane, and her concern, as we know, is rooted in the growing baby inside of her.

Sometimes taking another look at the past can be helpful, but when it comes to The Walking Dead, sometimes it can really give you insight you didn’t have before.
